Looking for a recommended spec/setup for an OSX based machine that would be used solely by someone to develop iOS apps.

Bit green when it comes to the Mac world but am guessing that something relatively entry-level will do ... would this be good enough?:

    Apple PowerBook (Model PB 3,5)
    RAM: 1GB, HDD: 40GB
    Screen: 15"
    O/S: Mac OSX 10.5.8
    Processor: PowerPC 7455 (G4)

That machine is about 12 years old. I'd be surprised if it actually still works. It's not entry-level, it's antiquated. Get something made in the last 5 years at least.

That computer is running OSX Leopard, and has a PowerPC processor. App development for iOS requires an Intel processor and Snow Leopard or greater running on the machine.

Oh... OK... did mention that I was a bit green at it ;)

Can anyone suggest an entry level intel-based machine with Snow Leopard or above then? 2nd hand is fine, obviously... What kind of money should someone expect to part with?

Macbook Air 13" entry level will do you nicely. €1,029 new, but you'll get one second hand. Not for much cheaper though as Apple products tend to hold their value.

If you've already got a screen, keyboard, and mouse, and don't mind the plugging/unplugging to share them, you could pick up a Mac Mini, €619 new, and I'm sure there'll be some in the refurb store for less too.

Just to add most of the base machines come with 4GB RAM - fine for most things, but could become a problem depending on what developing turns into. All current Macs bar the Mac Mini (maybe the 27" iMac?) don't support upgrading the RAM, so the might be another drive towards the mini.

Yeah, on the RAM note - go for at least 8GB. Most iOS devs seem to have 16GB or 32GB as it's better to have too much than too little, and RAM is very cheap.

We're talking about a fairly tight budget here, but yes..- point taken.
