Career in Clinical Psychology

Hi there, just looking for some info/advise on whether I'm going the right way about pursuing a career in clinical psychology. I'm under no illusion that it will be easy and am aware of the need for hard work and perseverance in order to get there! I have applied to DBS to undertake their Hdip in Psychology this year. This is a 2 year part time course and is accredited by PSI. My long term goal is then to work towards applying for the doctorate in clinical psychology in TCD. I am currently a case worker in a substance misuse setting and have been working in the field for the past 5 years. This role involves assessing and formulating care plans with service users on a one to one basis using evidence based approaches such as CBT mainly. I suppose I'm just wondering what else I could be doing to make myself more eligible for the Doctorate. Any advise would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!

I wrote a long post but I lost it so here are the bullet points

*Seriously consider applying to more courses - it's good to give yourself the best chance you can

*IMO, you need to consider how flexible you are willing to be as some opportunities are not always convenient (e.g in terms of location, working hours, job type and sometime pay)

*You have great experience but you may need to expand your CV. There are a lot of threads here outlining good ways of doing this. The easiest way is to begin volunteering in your spare time with a charity/non-profit. Given your range of clinical experience I'd suggest trying to get involved in research studies. The best experience is a job in which you are directly supervised by a clinical psychologist - this is a minimum requirement for TCD I think

Best of luck with your endeavour and I hope you enjoy the HDip
