are you getting power on the usb key is there a led indicating activity on the usb key is it formatted fat 32
Also these boxes seem to struggle a little with large usb keys
i have a kingston 16 gig works fine
also a maplins 16 gig works also
but i have a pqi that it wont recognise

you could Flash the box using a serial cable and the software from the ferguson site
    pretty straightforward

you may also be able to update via network cable

did you have an external hard drive on it before ?

are the USB keys formatted to FAT32 - it probably won't like NTFS or EXT

might not even like the fake CDROM that some sandisk keys use for drivers
