    Applied for a job.
Got an email saying they want an informal chat. Spent 15 mins on the phone talking about experience and the job etc. Was told I will hear if I get an interview in a week or two.

Just wondering is the informal chat a common thing or something they'd do to a lot of people or people that they'd be serious about interviewing?

Had an interview with another wine distributor, more low key than diageo but one question that I remembered was "what problems face our industry" I said a more health aware population who avoid drink and a need for non alcoholic beverages that have the same taste. Also corporate social responsibility that comes with alcohol distribution

Why is corporate social responsibility a problem?

And would it make a difference if I was a drinker or non drinker do you think?

Well the whole drink driving awareness campaign. I did a project on Diageo in college, they spend a lot on CSR because it looks good for corporate image and it's enforced by law now

It's a problem because it's like a fixed cost now for companies like Diageo

I haven't drank a drop in 3 years and the guy interviewing me said he didn't drink either. If you owned a casino would you hire someone that gambles?

How did it come up about drinking?

My cv had my personal training experience so he guessed I lived a healthy lifestyle. A 22 year old that doesn't drink is a nice pitch when in the interview. I always tell them I come in Monday morning very energetic because I have quiet weekends.

    Cool!

I don't drink at all. Was wondering if it might look that I might not care about the product doing well or something like that.

You might have to swirl some wine in your mouth when sitting among corporate clients but just spit it out when they aren't looking

It would be an engineering position. :-)

Ah I see. The job offered to me was sales planner which you'd imagine requires a passion for alcohol but they didn't mind so you'd be sorted. I ended up missing out on the position because a guy who worked in a similar role applied and I'm only a graduate. Still got very far for someone with no alcoholic taste buds, just knew my stuff about the industry in general and current affairs.

When they ask why pick Diageo just say you admire their risk taking and principles. They chabged their iconic name Guiness to Diageo around 1998 after a merger which was a huge call in terms of brand marketing and could have gone pear shaped. They also do a lot for community. A good company ran by very smart people, you will learn a lot there. Good Luck with It anyway

I haven't even gotten an interview yet so long way to go! Would love to get it though.

Just saw that now in the OP

My success rate on informal chat phone interviews is 8/10. I didn't get through on two occasions and one of them was very surprising because I had the woman talking for 35 minutes. It got to the point that I couldn't tell my gf about it haha but seriously id be very optimistic you will be called in

The job said 5 years experience. I have 1 years experience in a kind of similar position but on the phone they said the experience isn't a necessity which gave me a boost!

1 years experience means you have the basic knowledge and it also means you won't be coming in with bad habits. I'd imagine anyone with 5 years experience would be walking into the company expecting a lot of things and not following instructors like you would so depends on what the hr manager prefers really

I was thinking of saying that exact thing in a potential interview, that someone with years experience might have their own way of doing things and not follow the Diageo way 100%.

I said it today with an insurance company. Only have textbook knowledge of insurance so what they teach me will mould my knowledge to their way of thinking, I'm an open book. As they say you can't teach an old dog new tricks. BUT the guy with 5 years has proven he can do the same tasks you might have difficulty with, it really depends on the role specifics, can they afford to hire someone who will take a while to cope with demands. I'd say youll be brought in against another person who has the 5 years experience and it'll be 50-50. Post updates

    Will do.

I'm not sure if I would have someone else. There would be travel involved, one week at a time I think.
