BTEA Rates

    Hi everyone,

I was on BTEA in 2011-2012, and then from 2012-2013.

I've applied again this year and am waiting on an acceptance letter.

My question is I was previously on the rate of 188 (I'm 24).

With Budget 2013, BTEA was decreased to 160 for anyone under 25.

I've read on Citizens Information that ''People who were getting a Back to Education Allowance before 1 January 2013 are not affected by the Budget 2013 changes and continue to be paid at the same rate''

Will that mean I can claim the rate I previously had at 188?

No. It will be a "new claim" as you are reapplying. However, if it is a continuation of the same course i.e going from year 1 to year 2 where you received the full rate for the first year, you will continue to get the full rate until you graduate. But if it is a different course altogether it will be at the new, lower rate.

I didn't find it online, it happened to me. I get a reduced rate even thought I got the full rate in the past. When I asked they said it was due to changes in the budget.

It needs to be a continuation of BTEA. Example if the 2012/2013 was the year you started a course and you were still in it now you would not be affected. However, if you came off BTEA (finished a course/dropped out) and are now reapplying for a new one, you are affected.
