Any help on full set?

    Hi Guys,

I am a pretty bad golfer but took my first lesson a few days ago. And it was fantastic! Never knew I was doing so many fundamental things wrong.

Long story short, I do not currently have clubs as I sold my last set a few years back.
As I was bewildered when looking online for a set, I decided to ask the golf tutor what kind of set I should get.

After the lesson, he suggested that I get stiff steel shafts with 1/2" overlay. I would need a full set. He suggested that I get a reasonably good make and that the cost would be approx 500€.

I plan on getting back into golf full time as I do not have to work so much abroad these days.

Would anyone have any suggestions on makes? sets? or the best place to get them?

Any help would be much appreciated,
    Best regards,
    Kevin.

I got titleist ap1's recently and cant recommend them enough. I'd avoid taylormade as they bring out multiple sets a year really so your set would never be current with them. Wilson are a good enough brand also.

i'd recommend getting a fit for them so you'll know they will suit your needs

    Thanks slingerz,

Sorry for my ignorance, but what do you mean by 'i'd recommend getting a fit'?

Was once told that you should buy the chunkiest looking irons you can bear to look at, that's referring to the cavity at the back.

Taylormade make very good forgiving irons, so what if they bring out a new version every 6 months you don't have to change.

I started with Pings, they're very forgiving if you are a high handicapper, especially good for anyone who has trouble getting the ball in the air. You could pick up a set of G 10s, G15 or G20s on Adverts secondhand for €200-€250.

A fitting means a Pro looking / analysing your swing and selecting clubs to match, usually done on machines to measure swing speed, launch angles etc etc. I'm not sure how much use it would be for someone making big swing changes like you but many like the science.

G5's are as good as any if you want Ping, and cheaper.

Mizuno mx range second hand or jpx. Mcguirks have new Jpx for a good price around 350 iirc.

I'd spend as little as possible on old top brand gear, you could probably get irons Driver and woods hybrid for under 350 all in , with some patience and hours on Adverts.ie
