Gateway Laptop 2001 - How to Fix??!!

I have a veeeeery old Gateway laptop that I used for a Masters in 2001 that has my thesis on it. It's pretty much completely banjoed although will turn on briefly before dying a death. There's a tonne of stuff (incl thesis) that I'd like to take off it and store and was just wondering if anyone's done anything similar and…
