Gateway Laptop 2001 - How to Fix??!!

    I have a veeeeery old Gateway laptop that I used for a Masters in 2001 that has my thesis on it. It's pretty much completely banjoed although will turn on briefly before dying a death.
    There's a tonne of stuff (incl thesis) that I'd like to take off it and store and was just wondering if anyone's done anything similar and can offer any advice re best approach / anywhere that fixes archaic laptops out there etc!
