Does anyone have any idea when the Junior Cert Home Ec practicals are?

I know that last year they were during the two week period before Easter. Is this usually the case?

    Thanks

They are usually (as far as I can remember) the end of March/beginning of April.
Easter messes things up a bit next year as it is on 5th April and the holidays start 27th March.

One option would be to hold them in the week running up to the 27th and then also during the week schools re-open in April, but I would wait and see what they decide.

    **edit**
Easter 2010 was on April 4th and the practical that year was held 12 April - 23 April, so that might be a guide.
I would still wait and see what the SEC issues in their circular.

Thanks for such a comprehensive answer spurious. Do you have any idea when the SEC circular is issued?

My reason for wanting to know is that I have a Junior Cert child that's due to have surgery around that time and until I'm sure of the general date I can't have it scheduled.

    Thanks again for your help.

You could email the SEC and see, but it's usually after Christmas.

If the surgery does not take a lot of recovery time, they usually have a 'catch-up' practical session shortly after the original, but while I know the child is probably anxious to sit their exam, I'd take care of their health first.

The school will not have an issue with them doing HE for Leaving without sitting the JC practical if they were ill.

    Hi Cainer!
Sorry to hear your child needs surgery.
If a medical cert is provided to the SEC through the school after ensuring that the examiner is informed (usually by their teacher) that they are absent due to health issues, it is possible to reschedule.
I had a student in a similar situation this year and we were able to reschedule for late April/early May.
My gut is telling me that the exams will be after Easter this academic year, possibly starting on the very first Monday back after the Easter break.
The exams take two weeks to complete country wide, so even when you find out when the two-week period is, there is still no way of knowing exactly which of the ten school days your child could have their exam. If it's a case that the child is fit to complete their exam before their surgery and get it 'over and done with', perhaps you could chat to their teacher about trying to schedule the exams in your child's school in such a way that it suits everyone.
Best wishes to them in Home Ec and all their other subjects this year!
    Hope that helps.
    Regards.
