Change of vehicle ownership

My Dad past away last year and my Mam started driving his car. her car has been parked up, last taxed October 2013.

Im Finished college and starting work in October and I want to buy it off her. So we need to change ownership, what will be the position now regarding the motor tax?

Last October she rang the garda station and informed them that the car was parked up, but her son would be taking over ownership after finishing college, the garda told her that it would be Okay, im taking that as meaning no need to declare the vehicle off the road for tax purposes.

    Can anyone clarify this?

    Thanks.

You are only liable for tax from the beginning of the month that ownership changes.
