Car broken while not in my possession.

Hi, can someone advise, direction. I will give all details:

I gave an old car to a guy who in lieu of payment would service my current car and fix an issue I was having with my clutch, (over revving) my current car was driving and he drove it away for promised service and to sort out the clutch. He called to my house yesterday and passed on a message that the gearbox used to be a automatic and was changed to manual and it would cost me to replace. He said he would be back in the evening and did not return, nor call me.

This morning he has called to my house and passed on a message that the clutch has now broken and wants to charge me for fixing it.

His phone has been constantly off and he keeps calling to my house and passing messages onto me via my wife.

This is all the info I have at the moment. Where do I stand?

if the car was over reving and its a clutch problem its caused by slipping and the only way to fix properly is new clutch plate which comes in a kit the problem was there before the guy went near it.
i cant see how it matters if the gearbox used to be auto its nothing of concern once was working ok,
