Hi I am thinking about moving to Kinnegad or Mullingar or somewhere around that area to rent. My partner works in Roscommon so we need sort of a half way point. Can anyone fill me in who commutes from around that area? Bus/Train? What is it like? Where is better? Any suggestions appreciated :)

It's a fair distance, but people do it. It will obviously depend on where in Dublin.

Having both people commute that distance is unusual. It usually makes more sense to live close to at least one of the jobs, but obviously driving Roscommon-Dublin 5 days a week would be mad. Note the road from Longford to Roscommon isn't great - one would wonder what a snowy February commute would be like. There is the option of train from Mullingar to Drumcondra / Connolly / the DART. http://www.irishrail.ie/timetables/timetable-pdfs If you can avail of www.taxsaver.ie, then you can cut the price of monthly / annual tickets in half.

There would be the option of living in Longford or Roscommon - there are trains that arrive in Dublin city centre before 9am.

How about Athlone and a diesel car?

According to Google Maps, Roscommon to Athlone is 25 minutes, as opposed to an hour to Mullingar. Weekly fuel costs Athlone to Dublin would be in the €150 to €200 range. So before even the mortgage or rent, you're at least €600 down.

don't forget toll cost (If you use it), they can start to add up.
