I had an interview today with a very highly regarded nursing home in Cork, now I have been unemployed for 2 years and struggled to get work for these reasons
    1. at first not enough experience
    2. then no recent experience
    3. my mum is Director of Nursing in another decent Cork nursing home and its against their policy to hire family
Reason number three is causing me a lot of hassle and its always 'your x's daughter why cant she give you a job?' I really working as a carer but I'm not been given a chance and its wearing me down.

The Director of Nursing today insisted I was doing agency work for the last two years (I'm not, I wouldn't be looking for a lower paid job if I was) and then interrogated me on why my mother couldn't give me a job.

I need some outside advice on moving forward

Your mother needs to solve part of this for you: if it really is their policy not to hire family members and then intend on applying the policy, then she should be informally communicating it to the DONs in other nursing homes. (Lots of organisations may have the policy, but not apply it.)

Has she been recommending you for jobs elsewhere? If not, then you need to address that problem.
