Hi, I have just realised recently ds is entitled to his free pre school year as of next sept, so here in Portlaoise we have to book in early for these schools!
So we went to see one yesterday to see about getting him in just after christmas for two mornings per wk to get him use to it, and he loved been there yesterday :D but the girl just said to me to just consider the fact when he's finished his pre school year he'll be 4.5yrs, and if he's ready for school great, but if he's not his free year will be gone....so what would we do then??? Can you pay for an extra year or what happens? Is it really expensive? This is a montessori I'm looking at at the minute. This is our first child so any help would be appreciated. Also what age is school starting age these days?

You should talk to your school about what age they will take your child from. Our school takes them from 4 but strongly discourages starting a child younger than 4yrs 6mth.

Thanks for that, we spoke to some of the schools we are interested in and they all take once they are four by the start of april before the sept they start in and ds is four on 1st of april, so he'd be fine....It's such a huge thing to be thinking of all of a sudden! I only started thinking about playschools and then this, and then one of my friends said sur you need to be nearly thinking about ages for college at this stage! OMG give me a chance :D

If he is a 1st of April baby he will be one of the youngest in his class and may not be as socially mature as the other kids,so it might be worth your while jsut seeing how it goes 1st.

It's worth finding out the age profile of the rest of the class as well. If he's going to be 4 +5mth in a class with an average age of 5 +4mth he might struggle socially but if the average age is closer to his own it would be easier on him.

And i think your friend is right, it's no harm to think ahead to what age your child will be starting secondary school or college. They are valid considerations IMO. The move to secondary school is a big one, they will no longer have a teacher looking out for them then, they will move from room to room for various subjects and each teacher will just teach their subject, they don't have that 1 person to go to if they're in bother, it's a hard move and a bit of maturity will stand to them.
