    Greetings good men of boards.ie!
    I require your assistance...

It's the boyfrends birthday soon and he is golf crazy, I would like to buy him something nice to wear as he is very into his fashion.

I'm not too familiar with 'golfing gear' and what's what - he has plenty of nice t-shirts but now the weather is getting a bit chilly I thought I could get him a nice jacket to wear on the course - do golfers wear jackets or are they too restrictive??

Is there a particular brand I should be looking for? Or a specific 'type' of jacket that is suitable for golfing? Or do you lot just wear warm jumpers - as you can tell I am clueless...help!

    Thanks :)

If your going to get a waterproof jacket I would suggest one from Galvin Green. They are light and also keep the wind out. They are expensive. Around the €300 mark, but you could pick up last years model. All good quality and design.
You could also look for jackets in American golf, mc guirks or halpennys. Look for a jacket with gortex tech, best for waterproof.

Go for any golf sweater to wear over a polo shirt.

Something like this is light and warm

Have a look at what clothing brands he already has or the brand of this golf bag or clubs - he might not want to stray too far from these.
A pair of cold weather lined trousers or base layer could be good options going into the winter, unless he has these already.

Get him a pair of Long Johns !

I would go with Galvin Green if you want to impress him and depending on your budget you could go water proof (goretex) or non water proof.
All the cool kids seem to be wearing Galvin Green.
Mcguirks have some on sale at the moment.

Not correct - All the 'cool kids' in their 30's wear this - us young lads wear some of the more fashionable labels!!!:)

Scottsdale Golf or Trendy Golf in the UK have some great gear

Also Uniqlo have an Adam Scott range which is reasonable

    Best of luck!!

He is 36, so most definitely not a 'cool kid' although he likes to think of himself as one ;)
Thanks for all the suggestions guys, very helpful!
Jesus, this golfing gear is pricey, a very expensive hobby!

    Hi Magic,

Check out official Ryder Cup gear from European Tour website, they will even embroider it - if you wish (a small special message "MagicMushroom4eva") !?

If not I bet he's a big fan of 3 time major winner Padraig Harrington - you could get some of his stuff from Dunnes stores - haven't seen it in the shops or on the golf course yet myself but its meant to be nice !

Stay away from a jacket. I'm of similar young and cool age to your boyfriend. It is rare I would ever wear one on a golf course unless it's raining, and if he is golf mad, I suspect he already has rain gear.

What I do have though is a Windproof golf jumper. Basically a lovely heavy woolie jumper with a windproof lining inside it. These are a must for golfing in cold weather if you ask me. The aren't overly expensive either, maybe €50-100 for a good one.

I have a Cutter & Buck one, something like this, think I got it in McGuirks. But you could ask for them in any golf shop.

Alternatively a decent base layer, Under Armour do some good stuff, but good options here also

you could also go with a pair of these, they are great in cold weather, they come in a pair as opposed to normally single golf glove and they work :)

Or simple rain gloves, good for gripping club in wet weather, but not as warm as above

I also got a great gift of this last year, it's a class Zippo hand warmer set, comes with fuel etc, but you can get the warmer for just €25 on it's own

    http://www.zippo.ie/product.php?id=955

By the way, if you are going to McGuirks, their website is poor, they have much better selection in shop

    ^^ This ^^;)

Looks best on thinner chaps so bear that in mind - they ususally sell some stuff in McGuirks so you could have a look there as well as their website.
