    Regular or Stiff Shaft

    Went on Flightscope recently at a range. Non the wiser which shaft to go for.

    Average No's as follows

    10.5 deg Ping g30 Regular
    Launch = 11 deg
    Clubhead Speed = 89.1 - 91.0
    Smash = 1.44-1.45
    Spin = 2600 - 3200
    Carry = 195
    Total = 210

    10.5 deg Ping g30 Stiff
    Launch = 10 deg
    Clubhead Speed = 89.1 - 91.0
    Smash = 1.44-1.45
    Spin = 3000 - 4000
    Carry = 210
    Total = 240

    Sales guy was favouring Regular but at avg 90 clubhead speed said I was on the limits

    Comments welcomed.....CONFUSED

    Was their an accuracy differential in there as well ?

    More accurate with the regular than with the stiff ?

    More accurate with the Regular....

    The bad ones were better with the regular than the stiff however hit both well.

    I think the key data for you is the spin rate, for drive I think between 2400 to 2800 is ideal. I'm now expert but when I was fitted it was reduced from around 6000 to 3000. Better flight and smaller dispersion.

    Why confused then? You have just answered your question as your more accurate and more forgiving with regular.

    30 extra yards with the Stiff so is that not the answer??????? Launch looks a little low for the swing speed. Too be honest looking at the figures you are not hitting up on the ball so if you went up to a 12 or 13 degree driver the distances should go up. For me i wouldn't buy either with those figures even if you don't change your swing there should be a better fit. I'm guessing both of those are the standard off the shelf shafts. I'm guessing the stiff shaft suits you better but it is the spin that is keeping it in the air.
    Lots of good stuff on the net on launch angles Vs swing speed.

    Don't buy either of the above.

    What do you play in your irons ?

    Id be suspicious of the distance reading, thats a maths workout usually. Im on the border too but I play dgs300 shafts in my irons, my swing has a few quirks and I find I control the head better. Driver I use stiff matrix ozik as it fits my profile.

    If I was doing fitting, ID have a few old proper balls for the end to hit to judge the flight as they are quite different from range balls. If you are looking at the stock ping shaft ID go stiff. Stock stiff aren't usually much beyond firm.

    This is not a cheap driver. I would get fit somewhere else to confirm the results and/or get a demo that you can take out for a few holes.
    Accuracy is always better then distance but 30 yards is too much to give away between the 2 options.
    The optimum is low spin and high launch but the results seem opposite to this. Did you hit the centre of the club? This will affect the results.

    I'd echo comments above, Would prefer to see a higher launch angle and then the lower spin rate would be perfect.

    Suggests you are hitting down on the ball.

    Sorry for being a little off topic, but do you use regular range balls or the actual make of golf ball you use on the course when on Flightscope?
    I presume that there would be a massive difference between the spin rates of a range ball compared to a ProV1, or is there?

    Thanks for all the advice

    Not worth worrying about. Strong evidence that shaft stiffness differences are all in the mind.

    What's stamped on the shaft is irrelevant, but the numbers that each produce certainly are relevant.

    These numbers suggest, as others have pointed out, that the OP is hitting down on the ball. Low launch and high spin will not get the best out of any shaft.

    OP, not the advice you were looking for but you really need to address your launch characteristics before changing equipment. That way you will be able to get the most out of your gear.
