Why must every player, or official of our national sports say "Ya Know"? Should television stations beep out the words?

Ya know is the same as basically.... Filler while their brain catches up with their mouth.

A new one i heard this morning is I suppose. Deirdre Hearney, FF Councillor for North Dublin used about 50 times in an interview on Newstalk earlier on. That alone would give me a reason not to vote for her.

Former Clare hurler Christy O'Connor said it over 200 times in a recent interview on Newstalk. Three times in a row at one stage with little pause between. It made for really annoying listening.

Its as though the words 'ya know' get thrown in there as a substitute for 'eh' and 'em' type pauses that mean nothing but it actually sounds worse.

Is it a uniquely Irish thing? For a nation so good with words public speaking isn't our strong point

Wait until you hear a Scotsman speaking, ya ken? ken?

Sean Moncrieff uses ahh about 11 thousand times per hour when presenting his radio show. It's still a good show though.

Include "That's that" on the list, for people who can't handle silence or don't want to mull over an awkward/good point for too long

    "YES, I do know".

That's how I'd respond to these scumbag 'ya-know-ers'. Catch them off guard and play them at their own game, see how they like it.

A recent tendency has emerged to put a superfluous "So" at the beginning of a sentence. Not among the GAA classes though.

Where did you go on your holidays? So, we went to Spain. What time is it please. So, it's 11.40.

better than male Radio Éireann presenters though.

I worked with a lad who said "Basically ahhh" before every sentence. It was extremely frustrating after a while.
