    just wondering the Irish national anthem is in Irish, but our spoken language is by and large English, is there any other country that has their national anthem in their mother language, but not their spoken day to day language. Asked a few down in the pub but none of us can think of any, maybe apart from New Zealand that has the haka, but dont think that counts as national anthem :)

    The New Zealand anthem is in Maori and English. The Welsh anthem is in Welsh but they largely speak English. The South African anthem is in 5 languages.

    Amhran na bhFiann is an English song.

    Soldiers are we, whose lives are pledged to Ireland
    Some have come from a land beyond the wave,
    Sworn to be free,
    no more our ancient sireland
    Shall shelter the despot or the slave;
    tonight we man the Bearna Baoghal
    In Erin's cause.
    come woe or weal;
    'Mid cannon's roar and rifle's peal
    We'll chant a soldier's song.

    The Irish National Anthem was originally written in English and only translated years later.

    I'm pretty sure the Klingon Empire anthem was not written by a genuine Klingon.

    Try learning the words of the Spanish National Anthem OP.

    Absolute bitch of a song to sing.

    Especially after a few pints. ;)

    The National Anthem of Singapore is sung in Malay even though only something like only 25% of the population speak it as their first language. The rest using English or Chinese

    Written by Peadar Carney, uncle of Brendan Behan.

    It was written as a march., nowadays it seems to be played in waltz time by most except the Military., mores the pity imo.

    I often feel sorry for poor ould Peadar.

    When we learnt about him way back in National School, we thought for a while that his actual full name was Peadar Carney Uncle Of Brendan Behan.

    Our teacher never batted an eyelid when we referred to him as such.
