I have the claris on in dark grey 50x34 170mm crank, bought it about a month ago but changed frames so surplus. I could let it go for the price of the lower priced crank from bike 24. I have a spare (used) Octalink BB too I can throw in.

I also have an ultegra chainset that uses the same bb but it's not a compact. 53x39 170mm crank

    Shimano+Shimano should be perfect.

Very interesting indeed. The shimano claris compact chainset uses a 113mm octalink version 2 bottom bracket.

All the older shimano stuff such as 105 (5500 series) Ultegra (6500 series) and Dura ace (7700 series) require a version 1 octalink bottom bracket..Double 109.5mm / Triple 118.5mm.

@ Fab5..Your bottom bracket looks like an octalink version 1

As far as I'm aware, it's not possible to find a compact chainset that's compatible with octalink version 1.

Thanks for your reply and comments lads

I found thru a lot of searching a Richey Compact Chainset. There are two on ebay but fail after a year or two plus looking a $100 plus shipping and possible tax for the new one on ebay...

So I had a BB9000 and bought a used Shamino RS565 fitted today works 100%

Looking forward to some effortless climbing ;-)

    Thanks again for the feedback

Best of luck with your effortless climbing... In reality spinning lower gears up those hills will lessen the strain on you hip, knee, and ankle joints, muscles and tendons.. So your legs will feel much fresher. The thing is your cardiopulmonary system will be doing more work, so you will eventually become much fitter in the long run..
