    I know they're of the 'cow' persuasion, but what are they exactly?

    Suckler cows rear (suckle) their own calves. The off-spring are intended for beef.
    Dairy cows have 'servants' to rear their calves for them while we get to use their milk.

    Are the sucklers the calves or the mothers?

    They are the size of elephants and calve hippos. They have t*ts like Jordan. Cost ya more than some women to keep a year as well.

    Refers to both depending on context. Suckler cow. Suckler calf. Suckler herd= 'sucklers'.

    I know what they are now.

    Generally it is the cows that are referred to as sucklers. This is because the offspring of a dairy cow can be sired by a beef bull and become a suckler cow.

    I've hear calves of both beef and dairy herds being referred to as suck calves. Generally this means they are young calves.
    Suck calf = baby/ toddler
    Weaning = school child
    Yearling = adolescent/ teenager
    Heifer = female which hasn't had a calf
    Cow = mammy

    Out of interest why the question? Have you a bet on or something?
