Which Single Speed

Hoping to get some advice please. I'm want to get a single speed bike. I want something modern and I think flat bar. I see a lot of warnings about cheap fixie/single speeds so I'm worried about buying second hand or even cheap new ones as I don't really know what I'm looking at.
How will I know a poor frame?
Can anyone suggest a good bike and / or what to avoid?
    Thanks

I'd recommend either a Specialized Langster or a Surly Steamroller. Google search will give you loads of information on both.

surly make a really good frame. The steamroller is nice. I have a crosscheck which is also available in ss and love riding it.

Got a steel Langster built up recently with Mavic Ellipse wheels - perfect for my daily commute! Really enjoying it!

Sounds very nice. Any pics? Did you go for the 2014/15 Langster?

I have a 2009 Alu Langster which I love. Everything but the chain and freewheel are still stock. Hubs have been serviced. Never had a single problem with it.

I paid €450 new, and I think it's probably the best value for money purchase I've made.

I've a 2009 Langster too for the daily commute
I went SS on the commute because it's a flat spin and I wanted something with very low maintenance and my trusty Langster more than lives up to the job
She's a stylish looking ride too
BTW Fiachra, I hope you've swapped out the break pads along with the chain and cog!

Love my Giant Bowery mashup 2011. Lightweight and solid. Langster is supposed to be it's equivalent.

    Thanks for replays.
Any idea how state bikes hold up against the above mentioned?

Have a 2009 version of the Bowery. Use it for daily commute and in 5 years all I've replaced is the back wheel and the chain a couple of times. A very solid performer.
