What browser are ye using? In Dublin here & Firefox doesn't work at all for youtube. However, on Chrome the videos buffer for about 20 - 30 seconds then work fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,815 ✭✭✭SimonTemplar

What could cause Youtube buffering issues on a specific browser in a particular geographic location??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

    Fine here.
512k day is the unofficial title of an event that started on August 12, 2014. Multiple Internet routers, manufactured by Cisco and other vendors, encountered a default software limit of 512K (512,000 - 524,288)[1][2] IPv4 BGP routing table entries, causing assorted outages at various data centers. Various IT professionals reported the issue on Internet forums, sometimes as just "512k", and under a Twitter hashtag of #512k.

Noticed an artist I follow on FB saying he had a 5 minute full outage. My suspicion is we may have had the above happen again.

Just spent about 30 minutes messing around with my phone thinking it was an issue with it. Doh...

Hey all i fixed mine by changing DNS 1 to 8.8.8.8 and DNS 2 8.8.8.4 settings on what ever device you are trying to connect to youtube.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,832 ✭✭✭BionicRasher

Just watching Generation War on the chromecast. No issues here in South / East Cork

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 198 ✭✭teddyhead

    I am in Limerick.

+1 for slow, broken youtube. A twitter search brings up the same issue. I must have reinstalled flash about five times thinking that was the problem!

I changed the DNS settings on my iPad to Googles DNS servers 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 and now YouTube is working perfectly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,492 ✭✭✭KCAccidental

bad here in Cork City as well

For those changing their DNS settings to Google's Public DNS, is there a reason you prefer their one? Just putting on the oul tinfoil hat here!

I find them slightly faster than UPCs a chunk of the time, and also this outage proves that UPCs arent reliable or are too slow to update.

Youtube wouldn't work so I changed my dns to OpenDNS and my wifi speeds have doubled! Getting 80mb+, before I got around 40mb. Unbelievable .

    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220

    Last Result:
Download Speed: 81297 kbps (10162.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 10330 kbps (1291.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
    Latency: 8 ms
    Jitter: 2 ms

    Nice.

For the uninitiated, how'd you do that?

I'm getting the same Youtube problem, but if I disconnect from my UPC WiFi connection and link to my Meteor 4G instead the problem disappears.

Portlaoise, Same as everyone else been down all night with no improvements, In firefox its a no go what so ever with the following "An Error Occurred, Please Try Again Later" and Chrome it eventually loads but pretty badly. On UPC 200mb.. I ran through a VPN (ExPat Shield) and all was fine (Apart from loosing 180mb in speed. But lately i'v noticed horrible throttling on UPC and they are denying it point blank when i know its them as with a VPN the issues i call about dont exist. Only help i get is, "Have you tried forwarding your ports"..

Also guys, Changing your DNS may help the initial problem, But it could also decrease your speeds drastically. Maybe not for everyone though. Also AVOID OpenDNS like a plague. Same with Google but they arent as bad. check here for why. apcmag (DOT) com/why-using-google-dns-opendns-is-a-bad-idea (DOT) htm

Here is a list of them to try if ye wanna see what results you get.

    209.244.0.4

    Hurricane Electric11
    74.82.42.42

    puntCAT12
    109.69.8.51

    EDIT..

I decided to be curious and try Googles DNS, Speed is good.. downloaded some steam games at 24.7mbps but it does get throttled so keep that in mind if your a heavy traffic user. i'm currently sitting at 7.3mbps but i downloaded about 15GB before that happened.

The DNS servers you are using has NOTHING to do with the speed you can download.

There may be a difference in initially connecting in that the domain name you are looking up will be returned slightly faster but once you have resolved the IP address for the server you are connecting to, traffic through the DNS servers you have set has finished. The speed differences you are seeing are a coincidence or some other external influence.

Confirming the issue here with YouTube on UPC. This happened before and turned out to be an internal UPC routing issue.

According to their twitter they seem to be dealing with cases one by one, weird they don't cop it's clearly widespread with so many messages sent to them

Thats the way they always do it. They dont like admitting to any systematic issues. Their talk to forum is a little bit of a joke as everything is taken to PMs after one post.

    Thanks for that.

I ran Namebench to check, and it actually says that UPC's DNS is the best!?

Issue resolved for me now anyway according to the other half at home.

UPC Twitter account indicated they were aware of the issue and it is now resolved, and normal service will resume over the course of the morning

Yeah when it's working properly it's always better to use your ISP's DNS.

    ^^^^^^

Got a little problem with your maths there.

Actually looking at the response times there, UPC resloves uncached DNS queries at ~70ms whilst Google does ~110ms a significant speed difference. So for a unknown website UPC are faster, considerably so. :)

The cached queries response time don't really matter as your Operating System will already have them in the local cache if you visited them recently, which it can read at extremely high speeds. If it's not there, it's uncached so see above.

edit: this whole issue is probably caused by Akamai as you hinted to in your post - I'd imagine something happened to the youtube cache for UPCs hosted Akamai Content Delivery Network server(s). This youtube problem isn't related to DNS resolution speed.

youtube was fine earlier, now it's gone to pot again! could increased evening traffic be the cause?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 758 ✭✭✭platinums

three modem, is pant now as well, the last week.

Is this something to do wit the Net Neut going on?

Daily motion is fine, steam dl's at 1.2mb/sec on 4G, so its not the connection

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,122 ✭✭✭BeerWolf

On THREE... Youtube, specically, has been incredibly dodgy for the past number of days... constantly buffering... even though my connection everywhere else is perfectly fine.
