Hi all, I,m planning on changing my career and would be interested getting into health and safety , could anyone recommend a course or courses than I could do in the evenings or weekends that would give me a recognised qualification that would be sought after by employers. Any advice or help would be great. :)

The qualifications normally required are an industry standard Nebosh/Iosh I am not aware if these courses can be done part time during night or weekend,A mate of mine did there course over four years (Degree) with UCD.

There was a part time diploma in the university of limerick a few years ago. It was two nights a week and pretty intensive. I'm not sure if they are still running it as they started their degree in health and safety the year after my friend graduated from from the course. It might be worth checking out.

From what I am aware there aren't many roles available in Ireland at the moment. I personally know 3 health and safety officers who would have over 10 years practical experience, plus diplomas and/or degrees and additional training. All 3 have been working abroad for over 4 years. They can't get enough work here to provide for their families. A lot of employers just want someone to come in and review their operations and identify any issues. Return visits can vary from weekly to once or twice a year depending on the type of business.

Don't let this put you off, it really is a developing area but be aware you may have trouble securing full time employment in Ireland once qualified.

Above is the link for a Diploma in Health and Safety run by the University of Limerick. It is recognised by IOSH.

UL have scrapped the full degree programme. This year will be the final year of graduates from Health and Safety.

There are plenty of jobs within Health and Safety at the moment, however, most of these jobs require a number of years experience. You may get lucky and gain employment as a Junior/Graduate H&S officer upon completion of the Diploma. There are plenty of Jobbridge roles out there too if you wanted to gain practical experience.

I graduated from the full Degree in UL last year. As far as I'm aware, everyone I graduated with bar one, are in full time employment in a Health and Safety Role.

If you want any further info, send a pm.

    Hi again
Found this course by NEBOSH, international general certificate in occupational health and safety, it's run over ten days with an exam a week or two after the last class. It's pricey but not as expensive as the diploma they offer, would or could this course be used to gain employment in a health and safety role in Ireland?

As I mentioned in another post it took my mate four years to complete their course,We also employ H&S guys but the pre requisite is a minimum of a degree and with specialty in certain aspects of the industry they work in.
Next time that I meet up with my mate I will ask them about the course you mentioned.

I did both the Nebosh Cert and Intl Dip (higher level degree) part time over the last 4 years! Was tough going and was made a bit easier with work paying for it! I'd recommend the course but you'd need some practical experience going into it, it's not as easy as it seems! Do the cert and you'll know whether or not you're able for it! Best of luck.

Thanks for that info, have signed up to the NEBOSH international general certificate in health and safety starting in April looking forward to it. I approached work about helping me towards costs for the course but they didn't want to know about it, to be honest health and safety ain't high up on their interests. While I am waiting for this course to start I have went and got my manual handling cert and I am doing my FETAC level 5 OFA over the next two week ends, every little helps!

Most safety officer jobs candidates are requited to have Chartered Membership of IOSH. If I've read the IOSH accreditation for NEBOSH qualifications here:

    http://www.iosh.co.uk/Membership/About-membership/Qualifications.aspx?currentPage=6
I'm guessing you can apply for Technical Membership. The IOSH membership grades are:

    The six membership categories are:
    • Affiliate Member
    • Associate Member
    • Technical Member
    • Graduate Member
    • Chartered Member
    • Chartered Fellow
    http://www.iosh.co.uk/Membership/About-membership/Membership-categories.aspx

Graduate membership is for those that have graduated with a degree (Level 7) in the field of occupational safety but have little or no experience. Chartered membership requires a degree in the field plus two years experience.

You can complete a degree or alternatively a part time diploma course (level 8) usually 1.5 -2 years and get graduate membership. H&S related work experience gained after completing the NEBOSH Certificate might count as part of the two year requirement.

I guess you're looking to apply for junior roles, complete the diploma course part-time and then apply for Chartered membership of IOSH.

IOSH's accreditation webpage has an alphabetical list of diploma course providers in Ireland and not all will require a degree as a prerequisite for getting onto the diploma course - I know someone who didnt have any degree, completed a level 5 certificate course and got into UCD's diploma course, they had some relevant experience also.

    Congrats on your exam results.

Thanks for all that info, have been looking at IOSH website also. Are you working in H&S yourself?

just to resurrect this thread, thinking of doing the Health & Safety level 8 Hdip this Autumn- am I wasting my time jobs wise with no field experience what is the situation now? I have no prior experience in H&S and I work full time so couldn't do jobbridge etc. I also wouldn't be able to travel abroad for work. Any comments much appreciated

yes. sorry to say. I did the HDip and couldn't get much (a year or so in constrcution, I did the pharma focussed HDip) I tired everything jobsbridge, contacting companies to work for free but couldn't get anything.
Chem/Pharma companies employ from within. Send staff on a few day courses, train them up and off they go.
Construction is picking up but you'll be up against people with 20 plus years experience.
Seek other advise obviously before you decide !

Thanks so much for your reply. I had contacted UCC about it but got a vague reply mentioning IOSH membership and how they don't do graduate job profiles. I guess a lot of the jobs I had seen advertised were in the construction sector too

Hi, I am looking at the same 10 day course. Is it good and what are the chances of getting work with it.

Hi, I found it very good and interesting. 'Twas we'll run too. I didn't get work out of it as I found that it was a good qualification but not enough to get in the door as I thought it would.

    Thanks for the reply.
So I would probably need the 4 year diploma to get into work at health and safety.
