ewi impact resistance

looking at my next door neighbors ewi render i noticed (see attached pictures) two gouges in it which reveal the reinforcing mesh.

the render on top of this is at most 5mm deep and is so fragile i think it could be pulled off by a child.

i'm planning on getting ewi myself and am concerned that i might end up with the same problem!

what should i do to ensure i get a (much!) more robust ewi buildup?

    thanks for your help,

my missus pointed the problems out to our neighbor (we have not moved in yet and did not want to be blamed for damaging it).

when she touched the render close to one of the holes above a cm wide chunk dropped off.

our neighbor said they had holes like this in a good few places and when this was pointed out to the installer he said 'all ewi is like that'.

however i've seen youtube videos for one of the ewi systems showing a guy belting away at their render with a hammer and having no effect!

it doesn't seem fit for purpose to me. would our neighbour have any recourse beyond the dodgy installer?

a further problem is that ewi pictured above is located on our side of our neighbors house and we will have builders coming in soon so i'm unclear on our responsibilities for securing such a fragile render?

    1. not acceptable, installer must fix
    2. not acceptable, installer must fix - thats complete BS the installer is talking
    3. where it has been reinforced with mesh (which is commonly used in area where impact may occur)
    4. nor me
    5. i dont know, what was the product? product guarentee? installers insurance details? installers guarentee? architects specification? architect opinion on works installed? has the installer been paid? has a % been held for retention?
    6. build a plywood hoarding min 2m high all along the wall in quesiton - the last thing you need is to be drawn into this.

    thanks for your advise bryan.

our neighbor mentioned previously that they had a lot of problems with their builder and i have not talked to they in detail about the ewi but i'm guessing lots of corners were cut.

i suspect the installer will simply patch up the holes if pushed. would there be any point suggesting our neighbor contact the seai or nsai (or threaten to do this) about the quality of the work?

also, i would have assumed the mesh (which is visible through the holes) would be securely attached to the insulation but it seems to be loose. any ideas on why would that would be?

    1. i don't know
    2. no idea ask your 'neighbour' to look at the IAB cert for the product and review the installation guidelines or better yet get the product rep on site

    thanks bryan,

if the installer suggests just patching up holes rather than addressing the fragility of the render then i will suggest our neighbor look into getting the product rep involved.
