afaik they have an odd belt setup, wet vs dry belts and so on.
There's been a few threads on it here.

And they'd still need the belts done :-)

First of all, Ford says the interval on those belts is 200k km. It isn't, it's 100k, so if you've gone significantly over, don't even drive the car, 150k is the max you should get out of that belt, if you're lucky.
Secondly, the belt can be converted to a chain. You should seriously look at that. That would be any worries about spending money on future belt changes over with.
The chain was previously rated for the life of the car.

As for the belts themselves, there is a lower belt, it is the dreaded wetbelt, which comes in a cassette. That is the one that costs money and that is the one that goes. That belt will be replaced with a chain setup.

The upper belt is simply driven by the lower belt and drives your camshaft. Nothing horrible here, doesn't let go early, mine got done at 220 k km and looked fine. That stays a belt. And it doesn't cost a lot to change, pretty standard stuff.

Is that a chain conversion or is it just belt replacement?

Belt change. IIRC the chain conversion parts cost about €200 more than the belt parts. For most owners it doesn't make sense to convert to chain as the replacement belt will last for years before needing to be changed again.

Maybe for people who do average mileage yes.
I bought my CMax in 2010 with 115k km on it and it just went over the 300k km.
I am thankful it came with a chain and I didn't even know the sly fcukers put in this completely idiotic wet-belt setup not much later.
Great example of fixing something that's not broken, didn't need to be fixed and is now broken. Ford poured good money into this idiocy to come up with a worse solution.
It's either advanced stupidity or a deliberate fcuk-up.
My friend, who adores VAG diesel lumps, laughs himself silly every time the Ford timing chain/belt setup gets mentioned, but the we belt/belt setup has him on the floor.
Well, at least Ford didn't make a complete shambles of their oil-pump setup. :P

Can they do a cheap chain conversion? ;)

Sorry, does that mean then that you would expect a full conversion to cost close to €900? I.e. €650 + €200 odd?

Yes that would be about right IIRC.
