Shattered centre pane of triple glazed windows

    Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me if it is possible for the centre pane of a triple glazed window to shatter due to a previous impact on the outside pane? It's the middle pane on the sash of a window that was installed 2 and a half years ago. It just seemed to shatter for no reason and I would have assumed that there must have been a fault in the panel but the window company say that they don't cover it as it may be due to an impact that caused a weakness. I would be really grateful if someone could advise me here as I don't know if I have a case to argue with the window company.

It’s extremely unlikely that an impact to an outer pane has caused a failure in the centre pane – without leaving obvious evidence of an impact to the outer pane. I’ve never come across it. It’s very likely that it is either a thermal stress crack in annealed (untoughened) glass or a spontaneous Nickel sulphide failure. Both are relatively rare but not unknown and unfortunately neither would be covered by a typical warranty.
The only way to avoid the possibility of this occurring is to specify a treatment called heat-soaking which is expensive and therefore only used on certain circumstances – structural or roof glazing in high traffic areas, high rise etc.
