Hi, Company XY is in dispute with company AB about an invoice. AB has now threatened to put a charge over company XY until the amount is paid...Is it possible to just do this without going to court or giving Company XY formal legal notification that this charge may be placed rather than just saying in an email they are going to do it?

No, as far as I am aware they have to go through the courts procedure to obtain a judgment which would involve serving a claim notice to the debtor giving them time to pay or enter an Appearance and Defence.
