Dying brown roots

I already have blonde and copper highlights in, but my roots grow out really fast with a few grey hairs in tow. I would rather dye my hair at home with just normal blonde hair dye, to save a few pound. I already dyed my hair brown before, over the highlights, and it turned a horrible ginge colour.
