    Hi guys

Started a full time 3rd level degree last week, and I've retained my position of 2 days a week.

Is it possible for me to give up these 2 days and claim jobseekers as im gonna need the 2 days free for coursework, as well as it not financially beneficial for me in terms of expenses (travel, lunch) to retain it.

I haven't worked full time in 2 years and it's always been a part time job

    Cheers

No I f you are in full time education you are not able to take full time employment if offered to you so jobseekers is out of the question as this is for people who are looking for a job. You can apply for grants that would cover livibg expenses from places like dublin city council study grants.

You should have applied to SUSI in the summer and if you did and got turned down for the HEG then you may still get your registration fee paid and if you got turned down for that then according to the state you and your parents (if under 25?) have enough to live on and support you through college.

If you're over 25 and had been unemployed over the summer you could claim the back to education allowance so I'm not sure if working 2 days per week makes you ineligible.

I applied to SUSI but is that not for the 2,500 registration fees paid to college and not for actual living expenses?

I generally work 4+ days a week, and go to college full time...welcome to reality. Ask to work more to make it financially viable (I take my computer everywhere, I do assignments on lunch breaks / train etc, whenever I have enough time). We're lucky enough in this country that we're not (yet) crippled by student loans / debt.

If you work hard enough you can emerge with a Level 8 without a penny of debt to your name - a fairly privileged position to be in. Do what you have to to make it work.

SUSI provides the registration fee and if you are below another threshold up to €3000 towards living expenses. It depends on your age, how many dependents are in your house, how much your parents earn, what holdings they have, the distance you travel for college (so if you're living away from your parents that's the distance counted) the list is pretty long...have you heard from them yet?
