    Hi
I hope someone can shed some light on my problem.
    I have a 1.4 petrol golf, 2002
Had her in for nct last week and failed on emmissions
    oil temp @82'c
    @ lowidle(770)rpm Co was 2.06vol % (Above .50% Fail)
    HC 315ppm (Above 0ppm Fail)

    High Idle
    (2720rpm) Lambda .95 (not between .97 &1.03 fail)
    Co 3.73 vol (above 30%fail)
Hc 392 ppm (Above 200ppm Fail)

I re tested her this morning
Before the re test she got a oil and filter change
    Manifold cat and sensor replaced
    2nd cat and sensor replaced

    Failed again
    Results were
    Oil temp @100'c
    Low idle 860rpm
    CO 0.71 vol% (Above 50% Fail)
Hc300 ppm (Above 0 ppm Fail)

    High idle 2820rpm
    Lambda .93 (Not between0.97 & 1.0. Fail)
    CO 2.88vol% (Above .30% Fail)
    Hc389ppm (Above 200ppm Fail)

Any one have any ideas or a simple quick fix
Something I may have over looked??

Does it need the oil topped up regularly?

Seems strange after getting the sensor and cat replaced, does the car be sitting up for long periods and do you just do short journeys ?

Put some dipetane into the tank and give it a good drive, when bringing it back for the re-test drive in low gears with the revs high

Those 1.4 engines are rubbish I had an identical issue in July with a 1.4 bora and after hearing how expensive it would be to fix that car was jettisoned very quickly

I bought the car to do up and sell
It was lying idle for 6 months before the test
Not sure if she uses much oil definatly doesnt smell like she is anyway

Can you get a hold of an OBD2 reader and see what codes come up ?

Those 1.4s are notorious for burning oil, drive it for a few weeks and keep an eye.

It will give you a general code like a faulty sensor e.t.c but its a step in the right direction which costs nothing.
The code will be something like p1024 and there should be a book with the reader that gives a description, if not you can just search online

There's a 2000 1.4 petrol Bora in my family from new which I confidently expect to see 200K miles from, its around the 180K mark now on its original cat (only one in this car). It has passed its NCT every year, I put a new set of plugs in it a few days before the test (Champion RC89TMC) and remove them again after the test and put the old ones back in but I do renew them then every 2 years. I also clean out the throttle body before the test, you can do this quite easily yourself, just google it. Oil consumption doesnt seem to have any major affect on the the Bora regarding emissions, it uses about 1 Litre/1000 miles at the moment.
My last test readings were Low Idle: 770 RPM, Oil Temp 73C. CO 0.17%.
HC 151 ppm ( High HC at idle is N/A, see "Results")
High Idle: 2790 RPM, Lambda:1.00, CO 0.18%. HC 129 PPM.

In view of the low Lambda reading(s) it might be worth looking for leaks in the exhaust system particularly and any air leaks anywhere on or around the engine manifold. Low Lambda readings normally indicate a rich mixture but its no harm to carry out the above, the coolant temperature sensor, if faulty, can also cause incorrect mixtures, might be worth looking at too.
Best of luck with your problem, generally, most of these problems can be addressed with a bit of patience and a large dose of common sense.
