Girls in Northern Ireland abused by army/police

Naomi Long, MP for East Belfast, has said she's been approached by a number of women who claim to have been abused by members of the security forces (i.e. British Army and police) in the 1970s.

"A number of people have since approached me, particularly a group of women who claimed that they were abused whilst in care... But more than that, when they absconded from care, during the time when they were in care, they were further abused by members of the security forces and also by the police who were really charged with returning them to care but instead took advantage of that situation.

I think what it says is that there are serious issues in terms of child protection that were breached at that point in time that really need to be looked at in a more in-depth way that has been the case to date."

Despicable to hear about, especially in light of the Savile scandal and Rotherham.

Child protection in general appears to be lacking in every facet from the 90's back I suppose the real question for me is are we going to hear about abuse in 30's that is taking place now?

We might not be able to stop whats already happened but we have to prevent it from happening again.

This thread is about child abuse and Boards' resident purveyor of loyalist sectarian bile (check out their comments to the thread about Gerry Conlon's death - beyond disgusting) comes along and says "And look at what the IRA did".

You couldn't make it up. Although it isn't actually that surprising.
But it's particularly sick in this context.

    I think it is relevant.
    Ms. Long is a Republican.

Jeez, at least base your sectarianism and bigotry on correct information!

Or is anyone who's not a loyalist/hardline unionist up there a "republican" in your eyes?

Regardless of the IRA's actions in the past, it still doesn't justify members of the Army and Police violating their duties and positions, and abusing people. The issue is bigger then typical Republican Vs Loyalist crap, it's an issue of abuse which shouldn't be condoned.

Hopefully some enquiries are made and the people responsible are brought to justice.

Still though, the issue shouldn't just be brushed aside and ignored. If there are claims of abuse, then it should be investigated.

They know that, but just cannot bear criticism of any group in the north that's not a republican one.

Do courts in Northern Ireland operate on whataboutery like some of the posters obsessed with that region? Are cases dismissed on the basis that someone else committed another crime?
