Just to give you some history - I've owned 4 different cars this year:

    *97 micra (starter car, auto)
*green figaro! had cold start issues! swapped for a
*blue figaro - drove perfectly and was my baby until it was stolen and destroyed.
*06 diesel corsa 1.3 - had 130k miles and gearbox issues. Handed it back today.

I've no car now and my head is melted looking at cars. I'm really hoping I can get some solid recommendations based on:

Must be an auto, I can only drive autos.
    No bigger than 1.5
    Decent mpg
    4 - 5 k budget
    Prefer an 06+ model

Any ideas are appreciated! I'm looking at a Peugeot 206 (05 model) on Monday.

Given your needs, I'd go with the Prius in your other thread....if it checks out.

Absolutely no reason why it shouldn't like.

I'm really hoping so, just reading so many horror stories about batteries and such has given me the fear. I've had the worst luck, so I just need something solid. Raging my Corsa didn't work out. Savage mpg and a lovely car to drive, once you were out of 1st gear

I've been warned against the March jap imports, does the same go for the Honda jap imports? I'm not a fan of the Yaris btw.

What horror stories have you heard?

I'd imagine there's maybe a dozen stories (if that), and tens of thousands of Prius' sold.

Like I said in your other thread, we've had 2. The first for 5 years without missing a beat. That was until the wife wrote it off.
We replaced it with another Prius last December, and that's running just as good as the last.

Incredible cars to be fair. And the CVT is such an easy 'box to drive. Herself literally won't drive anything else now, which probably is a bad thing!

Okay, thank you for that. I mostly read about the batteries going and costing thousands to fix. I'm anxious buying privately, I don't really know anything about the Prius. I've been given a good list by Mad_Lad which will help.

I guess I've just had the worst luck ever lately and I'm over thinking things.

Prius is a no brainer as long as you're happy with the size.

Going to see the Prius tomorrow, guy on phone sounded really genuine.

If the Prius doesn't work out you should give the Honda a chance. I drove a 01 civic for two years and a 04 crv for six years and the most trouble I had was a single blown lightbulb. They really are fantastic cars. Best of luck.

    Great stuff, congrats.

How do you find the gearbox?

Good choice, given your requirements I think an early prius is the obvious choice!

Hahaha! It's absolutely brilliant. I was terrified at first, but 200kms home and I'm a pro now!

Grand! I've only ever driven autos. This is so smooth from take off all the way up. It's no speed daemon, that's fir sure but suits me just fine. I've driven a total of 8 different cars in the last 6 mths incl the new tdi golf. I think the Prius sits right under the golf drive wise for me. The golf was amazing with incredible mpg on the diesel model I had. I can't afford one so for me out of all the cars I've driven this year, Prius is second.

Of course none of them were as beautiful or fun as my Nissan Figaro. My heart still hurts to think about it.

Prius is a lot quicker than a Figaro , 10 secs 0-100kmh vs 13 for fig and 5 star safety rating for Prius too- enjoy
