Laos and Cambodia are great to travel in. Cheaper too and the locals are friendlier I think. Angkor Wat is a must-see, the river boat down Mekong in Northern Laos towards Luang Prabang was another highlight for me.

Max 1000 a month - you should have some left over too.

Prob best to book return flights in/out of Bangkok and then you can do a loop around. If you're stuck for time, Air Asia offer good flights around.

If you're not fussy about hotels then you can save a lot there although be warned anything less than 3 star in SEA is going to be taking a BIG chance. If you want to rough it accommodation for 5 euro a night and less can be easily found. Food is cheap if you stick to Asian food, drink is cheaper if you drink the local brews and if you avoid bars it can be very cheap. You can save again on tours by just doing some research and finding the places yourself.

+1 on Cambodia, lots to see and do and very very cheap. Thailand can be pricy especially Bangkok but it is a great transport hub and a great city. It would help if you were more specific, it's such a large region that prices can vary greatly depending on what you want to do where.
