Hi folks. Just wondering should the engine management light come on and go off when the ignition starts or does it only come on if something goes wrong. Thanks.

Perfectly normal. Nearly all the lights come on and go off to show they're working.

I think the problem here might the engine light isn't coming on at all? Am i reading that right?

Think you could be right. Have to wait and see...

Yes lads, the light does not come on at all. On other cars I've had the light comes on but then goes off when the engine starts.
On this Audi this doesn't come on at all. Starting to think someone has removed the bulb as the fuse is ok. Must plug it in now and see what they were hiding from me.

Had the car in with Pierse Motors in Tipp. They couldnt find anything wrong with the engine management light, no missing bulbs and no broken wires etc. no faults showed up on the system. They say it could have been this way for years.

They reckon its a faulty ECU - €688 for a new one. Looking at over €900 euros including part, labour and VAT...........ouch

My thoughts exactly George. Would this be something you have come across before.
I am just going to check the car every once in a while with my mates diagnostic tool.

What steps did the garage take to determine there was no problem with the light?

Did the pull out the cluster and see there was a bulb there and leave it at that or did they do an output test on the cluster with VCDS and actually get the bulb to light up ?

My thoughts when you initially told us of the problem were that some ape had removed or bypassed the bulb to cover up some engine problem and that in reality it was probably some stupid engine problem that would have been an easy enough fix.

I think i'd start with a second opinion from a specialist like George and go from there, if your mate has VCDS you can do an output test on the cluster and see if the engine light comes on.

There wouldn't be bulbs in that dash. It's more than likely led's so it wouldn't be removed.

I've seen people dismantle the clocks and blank off airbag lights with a bit of insulating tape.

    LED/Bulb/light splitting hairs really.
