MTK chip in that, steer well clear.
You'd afford a Nexus 5 at that price, or even a Moto G for half that again.

Think I was wowed a bit by the octa core bit, despite the fact no phones really required that many cores.

Whilst I wouldnt necessarily agree with this statement you can get better than the nexus for the money your gonna spend and still stick with the qualcomm processor.
Check the chinese Android phones thread but heres 2

Why would you 'steer well clear' of the MTK chip in that phone ?

The problem with Chinese phones is the poor software support, they usually get one or two bugfix updates but that's about it, never get upgraded to newer versions of Android unless the modding community do it themselves. With Android support and ongoing updates is the most important thing, even Samsung, HTC etc who are a little better than the Chinese brands still drop support after about 18 months.

Nexus devices get updates for longer and get them straight from Google as soon as they are released. You also have the advantage of no added manufacturer bloatware crap, vanilla Android is lovely and clean and not loaded down with sh1te you don't need.

May have been a bit of an exaggeration but mainly because if he wants to update passed the version of android that's on it now, in the future, he may not be able to as there are limited sources/development for MTK phones.

With the Nexus 5 and Moto G, its less of a problem updating. ;)

Not overawed by the Nexus 5 spec to be honest, think if I'm going to go google I'll wait for the next one, which is rumoured to be very high end. That oneplus phone also caught my eye, but heard getting 4g was an issue on it.

Other than the camera the nexus 5 is comparable to any high end phone. The nexus 6 will just be a slight upgrade on the 5, what makes the nexus brand so popular is the pricing when compared to the high ends from Samsung, Sony, Htc etc all over 600 quid

One plus one is a beauty if you can get one

Read somewhere that the new nexus 6 will likely contain a Octa-core MediaTek processor, so I'm conflicted.

If it does it will have support direct from Google like all nexus devices and won't be waiting for a manufacturer to release updates for it

Not necessarily true, Jiayu, elephone, zopo and a good few other brands have rolled out kitkat updates for some of there phones and I believe Meizu and Xiamo have or will be updating to the latest version of there ROM's

I do agree about the Nexus but alot of he chinese manufacturers dont add much to the vanilla android unless they have there own dedicated ROM's like Flyme and Miui.Cyanogenmod has a reputation for being better than Vanilla android (OPO has this preinstalled)

In fact anything but the nexus will have some sort of brand bloatware(Samsung,Sony, HTC) on it but it can sometimes be seen as an improvement on Vanilla android. So to use this a way of undermining chinese phones isn't exactly fair as ll the top well known manufacturers add to Android themselves.

Will any of these Chinese brands issue OTA updates to Android L?

Well based on the fact that they updated to kitkat there is a good chance they will.
But you can ask that question for all phones except the Nexus.
Will HTC,Samsung,Sony modified versions on KitKat get updated.Probably but it will most likely be limited to the top 2 or 3 flagship phones.

Flyme which is Meizu's rom and MIUI which is Xiami's rom is based on Kikat will push out updates I'm sure.

We all know that nexus will get the straight update and thats a good selling point but you cant claim all chinese phones wont get updated when historically some of the more established chinese brands have

My point very few of the Chinese ones get updates and when they do they get similar support to Samsung, HTC etc ie very short update path (less than 18 months) or else they depend completely on the community to mod for them. I would however have a Chinese brand before a bloated Samsung or HTC

So the only phone worth buying is the nexus then?

If long term support is what you're looking for yes, others may be happy with a short support cycle or be willing to mod themselves to the latest Android version when support runs out, I've been down that road with 3 Android phones already and couldn't be arsed modding at this stage so it's become a big deal for me, only nexus for me from now on

Don't think software support will be as important going forward. Any phone running kitkat would be grand for 5 years Atleast, it's not exactly like being stuck on gingerbread.

Um, would love to know your rationale for this. Can't imagine using the same phone for 5 years either.

Was talking about the software not the hardware.

I think it'll be more important, app developers don't want to support more than 2 versions with so many different types of hardware and different resolutions. Google realise this and there had been talk of them working with Samsung HTC etc to get devices supported for longer in future.

You'd pick up a G2 for around €300 now. Far superior to the Nexus 5.

    Lg g2?

i was going to just buy a nexus 5 but i am going to wait for the nexus 6, if the leaked specs are to be believed it will have a 2k screen, 3 gigs of ram and a snapdragon 805, probably priced around 400 as well, was going to get a note 4 but i just cant justify the cost of it

Yep. I'd love to upgrade to the G3 myself, but the G2 is too awesome to warrant the outlay. Great phone.

Aye, have the phone myself, best phone I've ever had.
