I have a HP P4 with 3GB ram and XP

So I now bought a Dell Win7 disk and want to upgrade .

What do I need to do , as I know that the hard drive won't install W7 as XP is already on it .

    Any easy solution ?

A Dell Windows 7 disk probably won't install on a HP machine. The easy solution is backup your data from XP and perform a fresh install of a legit version of Windows 7

I heard that if the hard drive was completely formatted , or I had a brand new external HD , that Dell win7 would install on any brand name pc

is that right or wrong /?

It depends, the dell disk might be 'tied' to dell machines.
If you have a windows 7 licence it is easier to just download an official image and burn a new dvd or put it on USB
