Electrician quote

Hello, I'm new here and hoping this is posted in the correct place. I’m looking on your opinion on a bill I got from an electrician. I'm renovating the upstairs of a dormer bungalow that involves raising the roof with the attic space used to build a bathroom and extend the 2 bedrooms.

I was given a ballpark figure from the contractor of 600 euro for labour and parts for the electrical work. This seemed very reasonable. There were no specifics given at this stage but it was understood that the following would be involved:

    (i) 4 double sockets
    (ii) 2 regular light fittings
(iii) Wire the shower and fan
    (iv) Non priority shower unit.

I knew that this was an allowance and subject to change.
The contractor had not factored in the requirement to install 2 smoke alarms and 2 heat detectors. The extras that we requested were 13 recessed Led lights as well as two lights in the front attic.
    So included are:
    (v) 13 recessed LED lights
    (vi) 2 attic lights
(vii) 2 heat detectors and 2 smoke alarms.
Now that the job has been done, the bill has arrived at 1800 euro (1000 labour; 800 materials), which seems excessive, particularly when no chasing of walls is required. The contractor made a mistake I know, but if the price of 1800 is reasonable I am prepared to pay it. Does this price seem correct?

It could be a very fair price. Hard to say without seeing it.
Did you use a registered electrical contractor ?
It is important to get an ETCI completion certificate for this work.

I did use a registered electrical contractor. I might be showing my naievity here but what is an ETCI cert and why is it important?

Sorry meant to mention that 13.5% VAT is to be included in this.

This certificate is a legal document that demonstrates that the electrical installation has been installed in accordance with the regulations (ET101:2008).
The REC is obliged to issue this certificate.
It is frequently (and incorrectly) referred to as a "RECI cert."

I priced it roughly up from your list and came to 1500 plus VAT
which is 1700 so it seems reasonable.

I also roughly priced up the list and came up with 1560 which is 1770 with vat on top. This is a completely rough price going on what i would normally charge for each point. For example i normally charge €45 per LED downlight point

The big variable in the quote is what brand of recessed lights and bulbs and what brand of heat and smoke alarms.
This could decide €300-400 difference. If he used high end products that price is ok.

    Hello Sir Arthur Daly,

Price is reasonable. Anything else is nitpicking.
