Astra 05 1.7CDTi Estate - Engine on the way out

    Hi Folks,

I'm looking for advice on what to do with my car. It appears that the engine is in big trouble. Oil pressure light stays on for about 30 seconds after starting up, then is flashing on and off intermittently but very frequently. It is driving reasonably ok but the turbo is beginnning to sound pretty high pitched also now. So i'm guessing a new engine or rebuild is required. I have arranged to buy a replacement from a friend rather than repair this one. My question is, what, if anything, is this car worth? Would I be wasting my time putting it up on DoneDeal with a description of the problem? and What could I hope to get or it?
It is in perfect nick apart from the engine. Plenty or room in the estate version, good back seat, 200,000km done, timing belt replaced at 195,000. New battery and alternator just gone into it. It was a very economical and sturdy car. Would be a same to just scrap?

    any advice or comments welcome

Have you even brought it anywhere to have it looked at, find out what the problem is and see exactly how much it might cost to repair, or did you just come to the conclusion its knackered without really knowing if it's something worth fixing?

Seems like madness to decide on buying something new when you don't even know wants wrong with the old.

Yes - sorry I shoud've mentioned - local mechanic has had a look and confirmed there is an oil pressure issue with the engine - i was hoping it was just the oil pressure switch but it would appear not. It seems to manifest itself after long drives i.e. when the oil in the engine gets very hot.
I have been thinking of moving on for quite a bit anyway so this was just the end game for me really. Not really interested in putting any more dosh in. Any thoughts on what you'd do about offloading it?
