Paying Irish Customs/Excise for Non-EU Orders?

    Hi all,

Ordering an item from Canada for about €200 - unfortunately it's not available anywhere in the EU. It will be sent by international expedited post (no courier). As a result, I assume I may end having a customs charge applied. Anyone familiar with the process that follows? The Revenue docs are beyond vague as to what happens.

As I may be away from home when it arrives (though should be able to get someone to sign for it), I'm wondering if there's any facility to pay any charges online or over a phone, rather than (as has been suggested in a few places) the postman showing up looking for a cheque/cash on the spot?

    This is 2014, right? :P

It depends on how it is been delivered. If its with an post they will leave a notice in saying you owe x amount for a package etc.

If it is UPS they will charge you on delivery and can be paid over the phone.

It's through international post, so should be via An Post.

You'll get a letter from the Revenue mail centre requesting an invoice, you can email that in and they'll give you the total. Pay the posty upon delivery.
