Hi all, looking at starting cycling to work from stillorgan to city centre, a distance of 10k or so. First question Is in relation to the actual route. I see from older posts that the cycle lanes on the n11 are poor, has there been any improvment? Next question was in relation to the type of bike to get? Hybrid or road bike? Would the road bike be ok on the dodgy road surfaces? Thanks

A road bike would be fine. Hybrids are great and versatile but knowing what I know now if I could only have one bike it'd be a road bike.

    YMMV

The choice of bike isn't going to improve the road surface. Stillorgan to Donnybrook garage is not great, but going the other way is better.
I suggest drop handlebars (road bike) with wide tyres (25mm or bigger), and mudguards.
My brother does that route and his bike has 35 mm (?) tyres. He has commuted that route for a good few years and changed bikes a few times.

Looking at getting a specialized allez road bike for this route so hopefully be ok and not pick up to many punctures!

If it's punctures you're worried about you'll want a set of Specialized Armadillos or Continental Gatorskins. Have run both before, top notch puncture resistance.

Just keep your tyre pressure up and inspect once a week for bits of glass etc. The need for armour on high pressure tyres is greatly exagerated in my experience.

Even on my relatively low pressure (85psi on 28x700c) commuter tyres I have yet to get a puncture on my 28mm Rubinos after a few thousand km often loaded and usually on rubbish roads.

Gatorskins etc often sacrifice ride quality for the sake of an armoured strip that can still be bypassed by a sly bit of glass on a wet day.
