Mavic Aksium: Loose

    My rear Aksium wheel has a lot of play in it. I have tightened the skewer properly and the cassette is not loose. Other wheels in the same frame are fine. When I put in place it wiggles as if it is still loose.

    Does anyone know what needs to be tightened?

    Strip off the cassette and free hub.

    That was exactly the problem. Cassette off and I was able to remove the drive side "hex" part. The bit to the right of the cassette in this pic: https://us.v-cdn.net/6034073/uploads/attachments/21267/320907.jpg

    That allowed me to screw in the axle more, so that I was only left with a small bit showing on the non-drive side.

    Freehub is easy to take off, just undo the end of axle nut and it should pull (carefully) off. If that's not enough, undo the 17mm nut within the end of the freehub and then pull.

    At a guess, the axle nut is somehow no longer attached to the axle or some such.

    The protrusion of the axle from each side of the hub should be less than the thickness of the dropouts on your frame, which it will be if the axle is properly centred in the hub.

    As it is now, the excessive length on the non-drive side means that your quick release will clamp against the axle when it's closed, rather the frame.

    You should be able to fix it without having to remove the freehub, though you might need to remove the cassette to gain access to the cones and their locknuts. Just loosen the cone on the non-drive side and tighten the cone on the drive side until the axle is centred. Then do the fine adjustment of the cones to remove play from the wheel bearings. Tighten the locknuts ... without upsetting the fine adjustments you've just done (that's the tricky bit!).

    Check that nothing is broken, especially the axle - if it is broken, you will be able to pull it straight out of the hub once the wheel is out of the frame. It's pretty strange that it ended up in that position, so it would be good to understand why.

    I rode the wheel off-road this morning, it's for my cross bike and it seemed OK. All the help was much appreciated.

    Incidentally, cleaning out the free hub can give the wheel a real new lease of life. I was almost buying a new pair after about 14000km but a good clean did it the world of good.
