Organizing tracks on HDD

I lost pretty much 350GB of music about a year back from a faulty external hard drive. Started gathering tracks again a few months ago as I am getting back into DJing. How does everyone organize and name their tracks?

A lot of my friends do it by the week or month of release. I prefer to do it by artist and whatever remixes that artist did as they have put their own sound on it.

Just wondering would it be a good idea to put some tags at the end of the file name. So if I want to find a Tech Trance track or Uplifting Trance track I could just use the search field.

That's not a bad idea with the tags, but you'll have to be consistent. Only use a handful of different ones, otherwise it will get confusing. In Traktor you can add tags in the 'comments' section of each file, and you can search for these from within the software. So you don't actually have to have the words 'tech trance' after each track title. That's a tidier way of doing it. But that's only gonna be of use to you if you're using software (or maybe the new CDJs allow you to search for what's in the comments section?). However, that won't work if you just want to do a general search of your hard drive. In that case you'd need to edit the actual file names. I wouldn't be too keen on that. It sounds a bit messy. When it comes to file structures I like to keep things simple. Artist > track > album > record label > genre. That's all you need. After that you can make playlists in Traktor/Rekordbox, etc, or pack your CD wallet correctly. If you still can't find what you're looking for you've got too much music that you're not really using.

Im currently using CDJ 400s so renaming the actual file names is the only option. So here are a few examples that I am thinking of using

    [Trance]
    [Tech]
    [Progressive]
    [Uplifting]
    [Hard]

So if I have a tech trance track thats uplifting it will be named 'artist - song (Remix) [Trance] [Tech] [Uplifting]'

    Does this sound alright?

I guess you're using the USB function the 400s? So you want to search your HDD for various tracks, using the tags, then organise them into folders on the USB keys? If that's the case then this looks pretty good. The file names are nice and tidy like that. They'll be easy to find. Go for it!

Yup only burn CDs if I am playing in a club. That said I would like to build up a large CD collection. Everything will be in that format on my external hard drive so if I want to do a techy progressive trance set then I can just search for those kind of tracks.

Thanks for your help and advice ;)
