Summons questions

    Hi all,

I think I may receive a summons to appear in a district court in the coming months. My questions are regarding the summons itself.

    1. I live in rented accommodation at the moment and may have moved by next summer. How can I ensure that I actually receive the summons if I'm no longer living at the address that I gave to the gards?

    2. I work full time and have heard that the summons will be delivered by registered post, if I'm not at home when the summons is attempted to be delivered, what will happen?

I'm not trying to avoid the summons at all, I have resigned myself to the fact that I will have to court and want to ensure that I actually receive the summons.

    All input appreciated, thanks.

    1. When you move, let the gardaí in the station you were dealing with know your new address.
    2. Use the An Post mail forwarder (it costs money) to redirect mail from the old address to the new.
    3. If a registered letter turns up while you're at work, An Post will leave a note for you, and you can then either arrange for it to be redelivered (through anpost.ie) or go and pick it up from your local sorting office.

Thanks for your reply. I'll look into the redirection service from an post, hopefully the service will work with registered post.

Do you know whether summons are always sent via registered post?

I don't I'm afraid. I've only every received one summons, and that was unsigned, undated, and left under a mat at my parents' house (not even put through the letterbox), which has never been my home address, and is 100 miles away from me. I suspect that is not the norm at all, and there was something weird going on there.

Summonses can be served either by registered post, in person (by a guard to the offender) or third party (by a guard to a person of reasonable relationship to the offender ie family member). I suggest you contact the guard who is summonsing you directly if you can and arrange for personal service (you can collect it at the station).

Oh I forgot, registered post or by person post (the guard putting it through the letter box themselves).
