4 year Inter cert cycle?

Having a discussion here where a friend says his school - and others - had a 4-year Inter cert cycle. This was back in the 80s. I did mine back in the 80s too but in (what I thought was the standard) 3 years - I've never heard of this 4 year cycle. However, he is adamant that this is not early-onset dementia.

Has anyone else every heard of this mythical 4 year Inter Cert cycle?

No, just a straight 4 years to the inter. The school changed to a 3 year cycle + transition year when transition year came in

Things were different in the 80s and yes, I remember schools with a 4 year Inter.. The one I worked in at that time had classes who did the Group after two years and then the Inter after three and other classes who did the Group after three years and then the Inter. after four.

Of course, a much higher percentage of people left following the Inter. (or Group) cert. in those days. There were many schools that did not go beyond Inter. or Group.

School I was in had the an optional 4 year cycle. If you wanted four years (quite a small group, I think mostly younger or weaker students) started school in 1st year and did exam in 4th year. Most people skipped 1st year, started secondary school in 2nd year and did inter cert in 4th year.
