Writing on on ipad

I've always used a laptop for writing and ipad for surfing so how do I use the ipad for writing as I no longer have a laptop. Ipad doesn't have word for windows on it does it? Is it easy to format text etc etc I have used drop box and want to switch between the ipad and my desktop PC so what's the best way to get use out…
