I thought that i read somewhere that 520d with M47 engine have a narrow exhaust pipe that turns down towards the ground and that N47 engine cars have oval exhausts that are straight out. I have looked at photos of 520ds on carzone, 2006 ones and 2008 ones and thay look very similar, just that the 2008 ones seem to extend out a little further but neither turn towards the ground. Its just that i'm looking at photos of a 2007 reg and trying to see can I work it out from the exhaust

    any clarity appreciated

    thanks

It's the 3 Series with the M47 engine that has the turned down exhaust pipe and N47 has the oval shaped one. All the E60 520D models since launch in 2005 had the oval shaped straight exhaust.

M47 520d has 163bhp, N47 520d has 177bhp. If it's an auto your looking at then the M47 520d will have the old style shifter whereas the N47 520d has the new style shifter.

    its a manual

it was originally registered in UK

is there any document I could ask the seller to scan and send to me to show engine type (power)?

I presume the original UK version of our VLC would have been handed in here when it went for ROI registration

The bhp should be listed on the log book. If you put the reg into one of those car history check websites it should list either the engine code (N47/M47) or bhp.

Old UK reg will also be listed on the Irish log book. The V5 document is not given back once it is transferred over to Irish plates.

If I got UK reg from current owner, would that still come up on UK car tell website?

Irish reg only gives make model and cc

You should spare a thought for the timing chain issue on these cars as oppposed to the exhaust shape, could be an expensive fix

I was looking at exhaust shapes as I thought it was a way of determining engine type, but as has been clarified in earlier post, exhaust shape only applies to 320ds

Irish car checking like motorcheck.ie will allow you to enter either the Irish or UK reg.
