If the thread is regularly updated, I wonder if it will be possible to tell if interns are being kept on, or replaced.

Graduates, and other individuals with special academic training, who are fairly inexperienced in practical work, are the major intended beneficiaries of the Job-Bridge Scheme.

An intern being paid an allowance during their training is not very different to a student receiving grant-aid during the course of his or her academic training.

So long as the Scheme is not being abused, and an employer had not intended to hire a paid employee in the intern's place, then there can be no logical opposition to the Scheme.

I also think it would be incredibly bad form for this forum to allow the good names of small practices to be smeared in a fit of populism, when there is no reason to believe they are doing anything unethical, nor in any way unlawful.

Well i just think the naming of solicitors' practices in this fashion could be open to abuse, by competitors and so on.

Everyone knows it is unpopular to hire interns. If I were a competitor of a firm hiring interns, I'd probably come on here and post a link to their ad, and make a speech about how much I disagree with it.

Yes, I understand that concern and I agree that there is the potential for something like this to be abused.

However, there are checks and balances available to us to ensure that this type of thing is not abused. On the one hand, we are acutely conscious of the risks here but that is because on the other hand, we are competent to deal with it.

In terms of the risk of competitors posting, you'd be surprised by how obvious that sort of thing becomes to people who have been dealing with it for almost a decade. If we suspect something is afoot, we can elevate it to people higher up in the site's hierarchy to investigate and deal with it appropriately.

For now, this thread is just watching what positions are open under the scheme.

It is also public knowledge. The tenders are out and searchable for anyone to see. I for one don't see the big deal, an extra €50/week on top of the dole for an unemployed solicitor plus the experience on the CV could potentially help these people get jobs. It's win-win IMO for the firms and the unemployed solicitors who have had a tough enough time after spending all that money to end up without a job.

That is one of the best opportunities out there. Any solicitor would be very lucky to get that because it would likely lead to full time employment in a large commercial firm. It's actually a good thing that they are offering it to unemployed solicitors rather than training up people from college into that position.

So they are on dole + €50 for 6 months. Doesn't matter, a fantastic opportunity and if hired after the 6 months they will leapfrog the trainees onto ~ 50k

If they are feeling so altrustic then nothing stopping them hiring joe bloggs solicitor and training him.

Why should the taxpayer subsidise them charging out a qualified solicitor at 200+ Euro an hour at paying him 200 a month. Just to be clear the exchequer is going to pay 188 a week for this intern to be placed in a booming industry.

The scheme was supposed to help struggling businesses. This is displacing a real job.

They're not feeling altruistic. They are busy professionals taking on an expensively educated solicitor, with a level of experience that would otherwise be considered insufficient. There is mutual benefit attached.

I know this has been answered, but I really dislike this risk of maligning specific firms who engage in a perfectly ethical, lawful conduct, which many would argue is in the public interest.

Lawful yes. Ethical. I dont believe so. How is it moral or ethical to pay someone in a month what you bill in 15 mins for their services. Thats just my opinion.

I hope whoever it is is offered a position at the expiration of the nine (perhaps 18 months), but judging by retension rates so far I have my doubts.

It's in the public interest to get that person off the dole. Which they will be after 6 months in a funds department of a top-tier firm. They will be taken on somewhere, definitely.

The internship is 6 months according to the listing and they realistically wont be billed at 200+. Trainee time is rarely if ever billed to the clients and an interns hours definitely wont be. In fact, a lot of NQ time is written off too.

This is nothing more than a great opportunity for someone who is skilled generally to become full time employed in a niche area of a very busy sector.

I'd snap it up and if anyone turned it down, they need their head checked.

4. Payment for legal services
All persons who are granted legal advice and/or legal aid must pay a contribution to the Board. I know you're joking but perhaps there should be a rule change to facilitate this. Some barristers building their practices are already availing of welfare. But technically, you cannot do so as a devil. There's actually very little change required to allow devils be taken-on as interns, as far as I can see, subject to the agreement of the Bar Council...

It might be a for the new young Bar committee to discuss and put a proposal to Council. Certainly given some of the hours and indeed weekends that are worked by devils for masters any money would be welcome!
