Peugeot 406 diesel estate. Which one is best?

    Looking at picking one of these up in the next month or two. Drove one before, plenty of space in them, comfy too and from having had a 505 estate in the past I have fond memories of them. Had a Passat so might go for the 406 this time out if I don't find a good W124.

    So a few questions...

    1. Which 406 to go for? 1.9 TD or 2.0 HDi ?

    2. Are any of the face lifted models particularly better or worse than the other ones, i.e. any troublesome issues ironed out later on, or did they make something worse.

    3. Do any one of them have softer parts or higher servicing bills than the other ?

    4. And what's the realistic overall mpg on N-roads and Motorways with the TD and the HDi ?


    Should be hitting 35-40,000 km per annum, need it for 2 years. High mileage ones don't bother me so long as they've been looked after.

    1. 1.9 TD every time
    2. Ecu can fail on the siemens equipped cars. Plus location of the BSI means it gets damp and causes problems
    3. Balljoints last no time if you lose the heat shield. Even then, expect replacing them every 20k miles. Same goes for trackrods they have a heat shield too. A silly lean at the back is usually the control arms and will require a track when finished. But they're all dirt cheap to buy and not difficult to work on
    4. Some claim 60+ mpg with the HDi. I used to get on average 45mpg on my daily commute of town driving, R147 (old N3) motorway and rush hour traffic with my 1.9TD. At it's best I got 53mpg on a motorway run

    Some estates had 7 seats too.

    Standard TD is quite the plodder so don't expect to get anywhere fast. I put a bigger turbo on mine, messed with the pump and still got modest mileage per tank (half a tank got me 350-400 miles). First thing to do is to turn the pump up a bit and bin the cat, it doesn't need one for the test and strangles the engine a bit

    Oil service every 6k miles. Fuel filter when it needs it, just keep one in the boot. T-belt every 60k miles

    Poor starting is usually either a faulty relay or failing plugs. Airbag light is usually the plugs under the seat.

    Finally if you are getting one, don't get one with electrical problems (ie window working half the time, connections are fine but still doesn't work)

    Source: I had 2. One was a complete dog (the owner kept dogs in it and I had to replace the interior, the smell THE SMELL), the other was the most fun daily car I've ever had :cool:

    Also check that the ABS functions, cos it's a beatch to repair when it doesn't.

    Fair play to Dgt as he covered most of your questions..:)

    Had a 96 1.9 Td which had the bullet proof idi engine which had 245k mls when i sold it.
    Tbh the Tie rods/balljoints were original from 80k mls and the only suspension parts i put into it were wishbone bushes and rear droplinks,
    The droplinks are a common failure but easy changed out.

    I was averaging between 44-48 mpgs,The 2.0 Hdi 90bhp should average around the early/mid 50's and the 110 bhp alittle less.

    The hdi's are also a great engine and have came across quite a few high mileage 406s running well up to 300k mls without any major problems

    As Dgt said the bsi's can cause problems if left sitting up for awhile or if dampness sets in.

    To me either the 1.9 td or Hdi's are well capable of reaching high mileage
    with added comfort/smooth ride to go with them..:)

    Far be it from me to disagree with Dgt and Row...........

    But I'm going to :P

    I had a 1.9tdi 406 and I loved it.
    But then I had a 2.0hdi c5 and the engine was much much better (mine was 110)
    And I kept on thinking how much nicer the 406 would have been with the hdi engine. In my experience the 2.0 hdi is bulletproof, quieter, smoother and more powerful than the 1.9 (unless you are willing to do the modifications that Dgt suggests) and the service intervals are longer on the hdi too.

    My 2p

    Edit: there was 200k miles on my Tdi and hdi when I sold them. So I wouldn't worry about the mileage.
