Acer Aspire running extremely slow - even in Safe Mode

I am trying to figure out why my Windows 7 Acer Aspire is running so slow. It boots up but takes ages to select any programs from the start menu.

I rebooted into Safe Mode. It's fine running commands off the comand line but any programs from the start menu take ages to load.

The menu pointer is still active so the PC isn't hung.

I tried restoring to a previous build but it's still the same. chkdsk didn't find any problems. A memory check came back without errors.

    Any ideas?

    Any AV scan running?
    Check startup autostarts with msconfig
Have you as much RAM as you should have (try reseating)
    Any new software installed?
Check Processes and Performance tabs in TaskManager

Cheers bonzodog2. I tried to uninstall the virus checker but it didn't get to finish. I switched it off using msconfig but still the same. The task manager isn't showing anything. The CPU graph suggests it's idle.

I booted into Safe Mode and experienced the same performance.

There is plenty of RAM. 4GB for Windows 7. I'll try to re-seat the RAM. Need to figure out how to get at it.

Can you see that 4GB is available in task manager? If so, there's no point reseating the RAM (as you are not experiencing any crashes either)

Cheers unkel. It was showing 4GB in the task manager. I reseated the RAM anyway and tried a factory reset. It seems to reinstall windows from a hidden partition. The windows reinstall failed but it didn't give me useful error message. I kicked it off again.

When you get it running, download and install malwarebytes, do an update, then full scan, and repair any issues. see if this might help

    Thanks all. Got it working.

It was so slow I couldn't back up my files. I downloaded Knoppix onto a USB thumb drive. Booted off the thumb drive and backed up all my files. It's a fantastic piece of software and OS.

I hit ALT F10 at bootup (without the thumb drive) and got into the Acer Aspire restore menu.

I restored it to factory settings which effectively reformatted my C drive and reinstalled windows 7.

Don't know what caused the slowness in safe mode before but it's great now. :)
