Hard water? Rental solution required.

Ive been renting over the last few years in Ireland. In the last 3 houses, the water quality has been poor. Kettles, coffee machines, showerheads etc all ruined and needing replaced frequently.

Im now in Cooley in Louth and its dire here. I can have a super clean brand new kettle covered in a soft chalky white mess after just 1 week. I have literally scraped about 1cm thick chalky residue from a kettle before.

I have an expensive coffee machine on which I now religiously only use bottled water.

As I only rent the property, I am not looking to spend a fortune on some permanent fitting, I am looking for something I can use that will filter the taps in the kitchen so that I can use that water in the coffee machine, kettle and for drinking. It is a hassle carting large volumes of water from the shop, and to be honest, I always run out as I'm useless at remembering to get it.

Can anyone recommend something that will allow me to drink from the kitchen taps again without this horrendous limescale? I am assuming it is limescale but I have never done any scientific tests.

We've used brita filter jugs for years, each one lasts a month or so, depending on the volume of water through it. I bought a load of them in bulk a couple of years ago. There are other brands that are less expensive though, check Amazon. Incidentally, that was where I got the jug we use now, it was going for £40 with a year's supply of filters, couldn't let it pass.

We only boil water that has been through the jug, otherwise, as we're in Meath, the kettle goes just like yours fairly quickly. Get some cheap lemon juice in Lidl and squirt it into te kettle at every jug filter change, keeps it clear for ages. You know when it's time to change the jug filter when you see the scale starting again in the kettle.

    Hope that helps.

I tried using bottled water in the kettle and found it was just as bad as the water from the tap .
I eventually put in a water softener. It's the only way. But the Britta filter is fine for the kettle water.
