    An Garda Síochána uses Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems in its Garda Traffic Corps vehicles. ANPR uses optical character recognition technology to automatically read vehicle registration plates and is used in patrol cars by many police forces worldwide. The technology can read number plates at a rate of six per second on vehicles travelling up to 180km/h.
    ANPR systems also include a speed detection capability. This allows for the measuring of the speed of a vehicle travelling in front of a patrol vehicle.

    Basically, your speed can be read by a traffic car that is following you in traffic

    No not yet but if the uk has it say 10 years ago then we will.

    We are so behind with tech here but that has it's up side too.;)

    How accurate is that? The only way to get the other cars speed is to be beside them. There are always fluctuations in your speed as you try to keep pace behind someone.

    Also, how accurate is a car spedo anyway? Dont they err on the side of caution by design? Does a traffic car spedo get calibrated like the speed guns have to?

    It's average speed over a distance between two points, like two bridges.

    The speedometer isn't used, neither calibrated nor accurate.

    Speed is measured using Puma Speed Enforcement Unit http://www.cleartone.co.uk/

    Speed of target vehicle is measured either dynamically (followed by measuring car) or static - time to cover fixed known distance. Both are time over distance, it's basically a sexy stopwatch.

    As Foreign said, it calculates the average speed over a fixed distance.
